Explosion in Moscow's Savyolovsky Station Square: A Police Officer Killed, Two Others Injured
In a shocking incident, a police officer lost their life and two others were injured in a blast that occurred near a police patrol car in central Moscow's Savyolovsky railway station square on Tuesday morning. The Russian interior ministry confirmed the tragic event, stating that a man approached the traffic police officers and detonated an explosive device, causing significant damage to the patrol car.
The blast took place just after midnight, and the area was promptly cordoned off by police, with multiple ambulances dispatched to the scene. The targeted patrol car was heavily damaged but did not catch fire, as reported by the state news agency Tass. Local media showcased images of the shattered windows of the police vehicle near the railway tracks.
Initially, the authorities suspected the perpetrator had fled, but further investigation revealed the man's death at the site. The explosive device and the attacker's motive remain under scrutiny by the authorities, who have opened a case for attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and illegal possession of explosive devices.
This incident is not an isolated one. In December 2025, two police officers were killed in a similar blast in southern Moscow while attempting to stop a suspicious person. The area had been a site of concern, as a Russian general had been killed days earlier. Moreover, the recent string of assassinations of Russian army officials on Russian soil during Moscow's war against Ukraine has raised security concerns.
The attack on a top Russian military intelligence officer earlier this month, where the officer was shot and wounded, further highlights the escalating tensions. Moscow has attributed the attack to Kyiv, adding to the ongoing geopolitical tensions. The authorities are now urging the public to remain vigilant and provide any relevant information to assist in the investigation.
