BAFTAs 2026 LIVE: Prince William presents award as host issues update
The 79th British Academy Film Awards, hosted by Alan Cumming, is underway at London's Royal Festival Hall. Celebrities, including Hollywood legends and influencers, have arrived to celebrate the film industry's achievements. Prince William and Princess Kate, in maroon attire, made a notable appearance, marking their first public event since Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest.
Dame Donna Langley's heartfelt speech focused on her unique experiences and the importance of embracing differences. She received the Fellowship Award from Prince William, who praised her advocacy for filmmaking.
However, viewers expressed outrage over segments not aired in real-time, including a tribute to Eric Dane, who recently passed away from ALS. The ceremony also faced criticism for its awkwardness, attributed to the new host, Alan Cumming, and the inclusion of a 7-minute skit before the show began.
Despite the controversies, the BAFTAs celebrated diverse talents, with My Father's Shadow winning the Outstanding Debut Award, One Battle After Another taking Best Adapted Screenplay, and Sentimental Value claiming Best Film Not in the English Language. Hamnet received the Outstanding British Film award, and Robert Aramayo won the EE Rising Star BAFTA for I Swear. Ryan Coogler, the Best Original Screenplay winner, delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the importance of empathy in storytelling.
The ceremony concluded with Paddington presenting the Best Children or Family Film award, and the event highlighted the film industry's talent and diversity, despite some technical and controversial moments.
