Amoebic Meningitis: What You Need to Know as Temperatures Rise (2026)

Be aware: the warm weather brings a hidden danger!

As we enjoy the rising temperatures in Western Australia, it's crucial to be mindful of a rare but deadly infection called amoebic meningitis. This infection, linked to warm, fresh water sources, is caused by a tiny organism called Naegleria fowleri amoeba.

But here's where it gets controversial... This amoeba can be present in various warm freshwater environments, including lakes, rivers, and even your garden hose or poorly maintained swimming pools.

Tanya Gillett, WA Health's Executive Director of Environmental Health, warns, "Any warm fresh water should be treated as a potential risk."

And this is the part most people miss... The amoeba can cause inflammation and damage to brain tissue if forced up the nose. This is why it's so important to take precautions, especially during hot weather.

People living in rural areas or using untreated water sources are at higher risk. Children and young people, due to their water play habits, are also more susceptible.

So, what can you do to stay safe?

  • Always run sprinklers and hoses until the water is cool before playing in it.
  • Avoid squirting water up your nose.
  • Be cautious when entering water; walk or lower yourself in, don't dive or jump.
  • Opt for swimming in the ocean or well-chlorinated pools instead of fresh water.
  • Regularly check and maintain the chlorine levels in your pool or spa.
  • Disinfect your pool and spa water with chlorine regularly.
  • Clean and dry wading pools after each use.
  • Flush out pipes before showering or bathing.
  • Use sterile or distilled water, not tap water, to rinse your nasal passages.
  • Avoid swimming in dirty water or stirring up sediment in fresh water sources.
  • Keep your head above water when swimming in fresh water.

Western Australia hasn't seen a case of amoebic meningitis since the 1980s, but it's important to stay vigilant.
